Volcanoes National Park

Virunga Lodge

by Volcanoes Safaris

Virunga Lodge is the original luxury lodge of the Rwandan gorilla circuit, and it still holds the best view in the country: a ridge-top position with the Virunga volcanoes on one side and the twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo below on the other. Ten hillside bandas, an unhurried atmosphere, and a conservation record that predates almost every other property here.

The bandas and the view

The bandas are spread along the ridge, each with a private veranda, a wood-burning stove and a bathroom with a view. They are comfortable rather than palatial — this is not the marble-and-plunge-pool tier — and the trade is the outlook, which no other lodge in Rwanda matches.

Sunrise over the volcanoes from the ridge is the reason people come back. Ask for a banda on the upper end of the ridge if the view is your priority, and be honest with us about mobility: the paths between bandas and the main area are steep.

Trekking from Virunga Lodge

The drive to the Kinigi briefing is longer than from Bisate or Kwitonda — plan on 45 to 60 minutes, with a departure around 05:30 for the 07:00 briefing. The lodge handles early breakfast, packed lunches, sticks and gaiters.

All Volcanoes National Park activities start in the morning, so afternoons are free for the Musanze Caves, a boat trip on Lake Bulera, the Iby'Iwacu-style community walk, or simply the veranda. The lodge's proximity to the lakes gives it afternoon options the park-side lodges do not have.

Community and conservation

Volcanoes Safaris established the lodge in 2004 and runs the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust alongside it, funding community projects in surrounding villages including a health, water and school programme.

The lodge's long presence here means unusually experienced local guiding. For travellers who want the Virungas without the newest-and-largest arms race, this is the most characterful choice in the region.

— Questions

Virunga Lodgeanswered

How far is Virunga Lodge from the gorilla trekking briefing?

About 45 to 60 minutes by road to the Kinigi park headquarters, so you leave the lodge around 05:30 for the 07:00 briefing. It is a longer transfer than the park-side lodges, which is the trade for the ridge-top lake and volcano views.

Is Virunga Lodge luxury?

It is rustic-luxury: comfortable, characterful hillside bandas with wood stoves and outstanding views, rather than the marble, spa and plunge-pool tier of Singita Kwitonda or One&Only Gorilla's Nest. Many travellers prefer it for exactly that reason.

Virunga Lodge or Bisate Lodge?

Virunga Lodge for the view and a gentler price, accepting a longer morning drive. Bisate for a much shorter transfer, a more contemporary villa and a more intimate six-room property. We are happy to price both for your dates so you can compare like for like.
