Volcanoes National Park

Bisate Lodge

by Wilderness

Bisate is the lodge most travellers picture when they imagine gorilla trekking in Rwanda: six thatched, dome-shaped forest villas built into the eroded cone of an extinct volcano, looking straight at Bisoke, Karisimbi and Mikeno. It is small, deeply committed to reforestation, and about 25 minutes from the Kinigi park headquarters where every trek begins.

The villas

Each villa is a single circular room of roughly 90 square metres, with a fireplace at its centre, a freestanding bath, and a curved wall of glass facing the volcanoes. There is no television, and the design deliberately keeps you looking outward. Underfloor heating and hot water bottles matter more than you expect at 2,600 metres — evenings sit in the low teens Celsius.

The three-villa Bisate Reserve, opened alongside the original lodge, works well for a family or a group travelling together who want the property's quieter end with a dedicated guide and vehicle.

Trekking from Bisate

You leave the lodge around 05:45 for the 07:00 briefing at Kinigi. Breakfast is served early, packed lunches are prepared, and the lodge lends gaiters, ponchos and walking sticks so you need not carry your own. All Volcanoes National Park activities — gorilla trekking, golden monkey trekking, the Dian Fossey tomb hike and Bisoke crater — start in the morning.

Because family allocation happens at Kinigi rather than at the lodge, no property can guarantee you an easy gorilla family. What a good operator can do is speak for you at the briefing. We tell the wardens honestly about your fitness before you arrive, which is how travellers who need a shorter trek end up with one.

Conservation and community

Bisate sits on land that was farmland a decade ago. Wilderness and the surrounding community have planted well over a million indigenous trees on the property, rebuilding a buffer of habitat against the park boundary. Guests plant a tree during their stay, and it is genuinely part of the visit rather than a gesture.

The lodge buys from local co-operatives and employs overwhelmingly from Bisate village. If conservation credentials matter to how you choose a lodge, this is the strongest story in the Virungas alongside Singita Kwitonda.

— Questions

Bisate Lodgeanswered

How much does a night at Bisate Lodge cost?

Rates move by season and by whether you take the main lodge or Bisate Reserve, and Wilderness sets them per party rather than as one public figure. As a planning guide, a fully inclusive night in the Virungas at this tier runs from roughly USD $2,000 to $3,570 per night for two people sharing. We quote the exact rate for your dates when we build your itinerary.

How far is Bisate Lodge from the gorilla trekking start point?

About 25 minutes by road to the Kinigi park headquarters, where every gorilla and golden monkey trek is briefed at 07:00. From Kinigi you drive on to the specific trailhead for the family you are assigned.

Is Bisate Lodge worth it?

If the setting and the conservation work matter to you as much as the trek, yes — no other lodge in Rwanda frames the volcanoes the way Bisate does. If you want maximum space, a full spa and a larger property, Singita Kwitonda or One&Only Gorilla's Nest are the better fit for the same money.
