Cost Questions Answered

How much does a gorilla permit cost in Rwanda?+

A standard Rwanda gorilla trekking permit costs USD $1,500 per person per trek, issued by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB). A discounted rate of USD $1,050 is available when you combine gorilla trekking with visits to Akagera or Nyungwe National Park in the same trip.

Can I buy gorilla permits myself to save money?+

Technically yes, but permits sell out months in advance and require booking through a registered Rwandan tour operator. Gerry secures permits as part of your package — no additional permit fee beyond what's in the package price.

Are there group discounts?+

RDB does not offer group discounts on permits. However, Gerry Tours' package rates benefit from economies of scale for larger groups (4+ guests), as vehicle and guide costs are shared. Contact us for a custom group quote.

When should I book to get the best price?+

Book 6–12 months ahead for peak season (June–September, December) to guarantee permits. Green season (March–May, October–November) offers the same experience at slightly lower lodge rates and with fewer visitors.

Is gorilla trekking worth the cost?+

Absolutely. Spending one hour with a mountain gorilla family in their natural habitat is consistently rated among the world's top wildlife experiences. Rwanda's gorilla population has grown from near-extinction to over 1,000 — your permit fee directly funds this conservation success story.
