Rwanda is home to approximately 600 of the world's 1,000+ mountain gorillas, all living in Volcanoes National Park in the Virunga Mountains. There are 12 habituated gorilla families available for trekking visits.
Gorilla trekking is available year-round. The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer easier trails, while the green season (March–May, October–November) has fewer visitors and lower prices. Gorillas can be visited every day of the year.
Moderate fitness is recommended. Treks range from 1 to 6 hours depending on the gorilla family's location. Porters are available (and encouraged) to carry your daypack and assist on steep terrain. We match you to a family suited to your fitness level.
Absolutely. Rwanda is one of the safest countries in Africa. Volcanoes National Park has armed ranger escorts, and the gorillas are fully habituated. You'll be in a small group of maximum 8 visitors with experienced trackers and guides.
Rwanda offers a more premium, time-efficient experience: shorter drive from Kigali (2.5 hours vs 8+ hours from Entebbe), better infrastructure, luxury lodges like One&Only and Bisate, and the world's cleanest capital city. Uganda permits cost less ($700 vs $1,500) but the overall experience in Rwanda is more polished.
