Singita Kwitonda Lodge

Each suite runs to roughly 180 square metres — considerably larger than anything else in the Virungas — with a glass-fronted living area, a fireplace, a heated plunge pool on the terrace and a bathroom looking at the volcanoes. Interiors use Rwandan craft throughout: imigongo panels, woven ceilings, locally thrown ceramics.

The Kwitonda Villa has four bedrooms, its own pool, chef and guide, and works for a family or two couples travelling together who want the property's privacy without booking it out entirely.

You are twenty minutes from the Kinigi briefing, so departure is around 06:00 after an early breakfast. Every Volcanoes National Park activity begins in the morning, which leaves afternoons genuinely free — this is where Kwitonda pulls ahead of its neighbours.

Afternoons run to the spa, the gym, the on-site nursery and farm, a Musanze Caves visit, or the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund's Ellen DeGeneres Campus nearby. After a demanding trek at altitude, having a proper spa and a heated pool on the same property is not a luxury detail; it is the difference between resting well and stiffening up.

Singita bought 178 acres of former farmland alongside the park and has been rewilding it since 2019, planting hundreds of thousands of indigenous seedlings from its own nursery. The intention is a continuous habitat corridor rather than a hard edge between farmland and forest.

The lodge's farm supplies much of the kitchen, and the culinary school trains staff drawn from surrounding villages. As with Bisate, the conservation programme is something you can walk through rather than read about in a brochure.
