How Rwanda gorilla permits are actually booked

The permit covers park entry, the guides and armed trackers who take you up, and one hour with the gorilla family you are allocated. It does not cover the vehicle that gets you to Kinigi, the porter who carries your bag, tips, or your lodge. Those are separate, and we itemise them clearly rather than folding them into a single opaque figure.

Permits are issued for a specific date. They are not transferable to another date at will, and the name on the permit must match your passport, so we take passport details early in the planning rather than at the end.

Rwanda offers a reduced permit rate of USD $1,050 when gorilla trekking is combined with visits to Akagera National Park and Nyungwe National Park in the same itinerary. It is a genuine incentive to travel beyond the Virungas, and for most guests the saving substantially offsets the extra nights.

The condition is that the wider itinerary is real and documented at the time of booking. We build the Akagera and Nyungwe legs into your journey first, then apply for the permits at the combination rate — not the other way round.

The permit is the fixed point of a Rwanda safari. Lodges can usually be substituted at short notice; a permit for 14 August cannot be conjured once the day is sold. For June to September and the Christmas window we open the permit application twelve months out. For the green seasons, three to six months is usually comfortable.

We hold permits directly with the RDB in your names. We do not resell third-party permits, and we will tell you plainly if a date is gone rather than taking a deposit and hoping.

RDB policy allows limited date changes and partial refunds depending on how far ahead you notify them, and the terms tighten sharply close to the trek date. Comprehensive travel insurance that covers trip cancellation is not optional on a journey of this cost, and we say so before you pay anything.

For guests who want their hour without another group present, Rwanda permits an exclusive private visit to a gorilla family at USD $15,000. Trackers and rangers brief you privately at your lodge, and the trek is arranged around your pace alone. It is the one genuine upgrade the park offers.
