Rwanda vs Congo for gorilla trekking

Cost, first and foremost. A Congo permit has historically been a fraction of Rwanda's, and for a traveller for whom the permit fee is the deciding factor, that matters. Virunga National Park is also spectacular — Nyiragongo's lava lake is one of the great sights in Africa when it is accessible, and the park's rangers are among the most courageous conservationists anywhere.

Congo is the choice of the seasoned, flexible, independent traveller who is comfortable with uncertainty and wants to support a park that badly needs visitors.

Access and reliability. Volcanoes National Park is two and a half to three hours from Kigali International Airport on excellent tarmac, or twenty-five minutes by helicopter. There is no border crossing, no internal flight, no change of vehicle. Guests routinely land in Kigali in the evening and trek the following morning.

Rwanda also has the lodges. Bisate, Singita Kwitonda, One&Only Gorilla's Nest and Virunga Lodge sit within half an hour of the Kinigi briefing point, and there is nothing comparable on the Congolese side. Add Rwanda's stability, its well-organised RDB permit system, Akagera's Big Six game viewing and Nyungwe's chimpanzees and canopy walk, and one country carries a complete two-week itinerary.

Rwanda is consistently ranked among the safest countries in Africa for visitors, and Volcanoes National Park has operated tourism continuously and without interruption for years. Eastern DRC's security situation has repeatedly caused Virunga National Park to suspend tourism at short notice, sometimes for extended periods.

This is the crux of the decision. If a trip is planned around a single hour with gorillas, booked non-refundably, and taken once in a lifetime, the risk of a park closing weeks before arrival is not a small consideration. We do not operate in the DRC, and we would not place a first-time visitor's only gorilla permit there.

Choose Congo if the permit price is decisive, you travel independently, you have flexible dates and you accept that plans may change. Choose Rwanda if you want certainty, short transfers, world-class lodges and a country that carries a full safari itinerary either side of the trek.
